When Panic Became a Path

When Panic Became a Path: My Unexpected Journey into Herbalism

Fifteen years ago, I wrote something on Facebook in a moment of pure frustration—half humor, half desperation:

At the time, I meant every word.

I wasn’t being dramatic. If you live with migraines, you understand—when something works, it’s not just medicine… it’s stability, predictability, and honestly, a little bit of peace in your back pocket.

And suddenly, mine was gone.

The Breaking Point

I had already spent years navigating the maze of migraine treatments—trying prescriptions, adjusting dosages, dealing with side effects, hoping this one would finally be “the one.”

So when the medication that actually worked for me was discontinued, it didn’t just feel inconvenient.

It felt like starting over.

Again.

And if you’ve ever been there, you know that “trial and error” isn’t a quick process. It’s months—sometimes years—of experimenting, reacting, recovering, and repeating. For me, it took over ten years to find that medicine and it still wasn’t perfect – but it was what worked at the time.

I remember thinking:

There has to be another way.

The First Turn Toward Herbs

That thought—quiet at first—was the beginning of everything.

I didn’t start out as an herbalist. I started as someone who was tired… and hurting… and looking for options that didn’t feel so fragile.

At first, it was simple curiosity:

  • Could plants help with headaches?
  • Were there gentler options that didn’t come with the same rollercoaster of side effects?
  • Could I support my body instead of constantly reacting to symptoms?

I began reading. Then researching. I learned good herbal information from the iffy information. Then I began experimenting—carefully.

And somewhere along the way, something shifted.

This wasn’t just about migraines anymore.

Learning to Listen to My Body

Herbalism taught me something that conventional treatment never quite did:

To listen to my body instead of overriding it.

Instead of asking:
“What will stop this migraine right now?”

I started asking:

  • What triggered this?
  • What does my nervous system need?
  • Is my digestion playing a role?
  • Am I depleted… overstimulated… inflamed?

That shift changed everything.

Because herbs don’t just block symptoms—they support systems.

And that’s where healing started to feel different.

The Long Road (That Wasn’t a Straight Line)

Let me be honest—this was not an overnight success story. I learned that my migraines were complicated by Meniere’s disease (something I found out along the way that my grandfather had, in both ears, just like me).

There were plenty of:

  • “Well, that didn’t work” moments
  • Teas that tasted… questionable at best
  • Protocols that helped one week and not the next
  • Deep dives into contraindications and interactions

But unlike the revolving door of prescriptions, this path felt like it was building something.

Knowledge. Awareness. Confidence.

I wasn’t just trying things anymore.

I was learning why they worked—or didn’t.

From Personal Need to Purpose

What started as a desperate search slowly became a passion… and then, eventually, part of my life’s work.

I realized:

  • So many people are stuck in that same cycle of trial and error
  • So many are sensitive to medications or dealing with complex triggers
  • So many just want to feel heard and supported

And that’s where herbalism shines.

Not as a replacement for everything—but as a deeply personal, adaptable, and empowering tool.

What I Know Now (That I Wish I Knew Then)

If I could go back and sit with that version of myself—the one staring at a discontinued medication and feeling that wave of panic—I would say:

  • You’re not out of options
  • Your body is not working against you
  • There are gentler paths worth exploring
  • And this moment? It’s not the end of something

It’s the beginning of something much bigger

Why This Still Matters

I still remember that feeling of panic.

And honestly? I’m grateful for it.

Because it pushed me to ask better questions, to look beyond the obvious, and to build a relationship with my health that I never would have found otherwise.

That one frustrating moment…

…became the doorway to herbalism
…to deeper understanding
…and to helping others walk this path too

A Gentle Note (Because This Matters Too)

As always, herbalism isn’t one-size-fits-all. Migraines, especially, can be complex and deeply individual.

If you’re exploring herbs for headaches:

  • Start low and go slow
  • Pay attention to your unique triggers
  • Be mindful of medication interactions
  • And don’t be afraid to blend approaches when needed

Before starting on a new herbal remedy, check with your doctor, holistic practitioner, or functional MD.

Closing Thoughts

Sometimes the thing that feels like everything is falling apart…

…is actually everything starting to come together.

That was true for me.

And if you’re in that place right now—frustrated, tired, searching—

I see you.

And there are other paths forward.
