In fact, in some cases, living well could save you money! For instance, staying hydrated and getting exercise could prevent medical issues later on. These five simple ideas can help you get healthier while saving money anytime, anywhere.

  1. Enjoy Reduced Costs by Switching to a Healthier Lifestyle

First things first – what you may not realize is that switching to a healthier way of life could save you money, both now and over the long run. This means you may be able to reduce your spending just by making a few healthy lifestyle tweaks.

For example, when you’re in better health, you can enjoy lower health insurance premiums, and potentially lower life insurance premiums later on. Cooking fresh meals at home is usually significantly cheaper than eating out. Additionally, walking to work or riding your bike gives you a chance to exercise while cutting down on expenses!

  1. Ditch Gyms and Classes for Inexpensive, At-Home Workouts and Outdoor Time

According to one study, exercise can increase your lifespan and is key to a healthy lifestyle. If you’re currently spending oodles of money on gym subscriptions or courses, switch to at-home workouts instead. You could:

If you think you’re too busy to find time for fitness, you can go for walks during your lunch break or take the stairs at work instead of the elevator.

  1. Take Herbal Supplements

There are many herbal supplements that can improve your health. A daily multivitamin is a good place to start, as it can help to fill in any nutritional gaps. However, there are also specific supplements that can target specific health concerns. Here are a few more herbs that may be worth adding to your supplement regimen:

  • Ginseng: Often taken to improve energy levels and stamina
  • St. John’s Wort: Used to treat mild depression and anxiety
  • Echinacea: Taken at the first sign of a cold or flu, may help to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms
  • Green tea: Contains antioxidants that can protect cells from damage and may also boost metabolism

While herbal supplements can be beneficial, it’s important to talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement, as they can interact with medications you may be taking.

  1. Modify How You Cook, Grocery-Shop, and Eat for Lower Food Bills

Eating well is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, but one that can sometimes come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, you can eat healthfully and cut your grocery bills by:

Morning in the Aspens by Kathy McCabe

My sister and I traveled to Colorado recently to surprise our mother on her 80th birthday and to see my nephew and his his wife at their mountain home above Paonia. Now, when I talk about paradise, I’m not exaggerating – it is lush and beautiful and splendid!  It was overwhelming the variety of plants growing.

I identified common white clover and plantain for them, as well as some not so common plants. But it would take me a lifetime to identify everything up there – not that I’d mind but I think they would get tired of Aunty Kathy as a permanent houseguest. 🙂

This brings me to my point, I suggested that if they were serious about wanting to know more of the edibles on their land, that they hire an herbalist who is familiar with the area to come take them on nature walks. As herbalists, we need to point in the right direction, even if it is away from ourselves. I’m happy I was able to show them the plants I knew about, and it was very enjoyable to have such eager students!

I felt blessed to be there and refreshed in spirit  – and sorry to leave.

Calming Room SprayIntroducing our Calming Room Spray!  In a special edition 8-ounce reusable bottle.  Did you know that lavender provides calming benefits just by smelling it?  I can be stressed to the max with my shoulders up near my ears and just smelling lavender makes me feel better.  Turns out, there’s proof it works!

Lavender’s anxiolytic properties come not just from ingestion but also from inhalation. An article that the inhalation of lavendulan officinal reduced the anxiety levels and found that aromatherapy using Lavender increased the parasympathetic nervous system (Essential oil of lavender in anxiety disorders: Ready for prime time? – PMC (nih.gov)). (I wrote this recently in my homework for Cornell University.)

To this end, we’ve created a Calming Room Spray utilizing lavender and chamomile – another very relaxing herb – you can shake it up and spray it or put a little into your diffuser.
