What Would You Say to Herbal Software That Remembered the Whole Story?
Herbal medicine making is rarely as simple as recording a recipe.
A formula changes as we work with it. We adjust a proportion, change an extraction method, replace an ingredient—or discover that one particular version worked beautifully and deserves to be preserved exactly as it was.
Then there are the batches themselves.
Which lots of herbs went into this tincture? When was it started? When was it pressed? How much did it yield? If several bottles came from that batch, could each one be traced back to the ingredients used to make it?
For small herbal practices, much of this information lives in notebooks, spreadsheets, labels, receipts—and sometimes in our memories. Each system may work on its own, but the complete story can become scattered.
So I have a question for the herbalists, medicine makers, growers and formulators among you:
Would you be interested in software that included formula history and batch traceability as part of its basic structure?
Imagine being able to:
- Preserve every version of a formula without losing the earlier ones
- See exactly what changed from one version to the next
- Record the specific ingredient lots used in each batch
- Follow an herb from inventory, through production, and into finished bottles, jars or packages
- Keep notes, dates, yields and batch details together
- Look back months—or years—later and understand exactly how something was made
Not because traditional herbal practice needs to become cold or overly technical. Quite the opposite.
Good records protect the knowledge behind the work. They allow us to learn from each batch, repeat what worked, and retain the small decisions that might otherwise disappear with time.
I’m curious:
Would this kind of system interest you? Which part would be most valuable—formula history, batch traceability, inventory connections, production records, or something else entirely?
Tell me in the comments. I would genuinely love to know how other herbalists currently keep track of the stories behind their formulas.
Thanks!
Kathy
